SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- A pilot for a local budget carrier was caught earlier this month trying to board a plane under the influence of alcohol, industry sources said Thursday, the second such case since May.

The captain of Eastar Jet's flight ZE203 bound for the southern resort island of Jeju on June 10 failed a spot alcohol test before boarding at Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, according to the sources.

The pilot, whose name was withheld, registered a blood alcohol content of 0.042 percent, slightly higher than the permissible level of 0.04 percent, the sources said.

He was banned from boarding, and the flight took off 30 minutes later than planned after the airline replaced the captain.

The Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs suspended the pilot for one month and imposed a fine of 20 million won (US$18,700) on the company.

In early May, a pilot with Asiana Airlines was caught boarding a plane under the influence of alcohol in Busan, forcing the flight to depart an hour late.

Earlier this month, the ministry unveiled a revision to the country's aviation law to tighten the drinking regulations on pilots and flight attendants. Under the revised law, the permissible blood alcohol level of pilots and flight attendants will be lowered from 0.04 percent to 0.03 percent,

아찔~ 술취한 항공기 조종사 또 적발

(서울=연합뉴스) 현윤경 기자 = 지난달 김해공항에서 아시아나항공[020560] 조종사가 음주 단속에 걸려 물의를 일으킨 데 이어 항공기 조종사의 음주가 또 적발됐다.

30일 국토해양부에 따르면 저가항공사인 이스타항공 기장이 전날 마신 술이 덜 깬 상태로 조종간을 잡으려다 국토부 감독관에게 발각됐다.

지난 10일 오전 7시5분 김포를 떠나 제주로 가려던 이스타항공 203편의 기장(41)이 국토부 감독관의 불시 음주 단속에 적발됐다는 것이다.

당시 해당 기장의 혈중 알코올 농도는 0.042%로 항공 업종 종사자에 대한 단속 기준치인 0.04%를 약간 넘은 것으로 전해졌다.

탑승교에서 적발된 조종사는 비행기에 오르지 못했고, 대체 비행사가 투입된 여객기는 예정보다 30분가량 늦게 이륙했다.

국토부는 적발된 기장에게 정직 1개월, 이스타항공에는 과징금 2천만원의 처분을 최근 내렸다.

국토부 항공자격과 관계자는 "기준치를 크게 초과하지는 않았으나 요금을 받고 승객과 화물을 실어나르는 조종사가 음주 상태에서 비행기를 운항하려 한 것은 용납할 수 없는 일"이라며 "앞으로 항공사에 대한 음주 단속과 교육을 더 강화해 나갈 것"이라고 말했다.

국토부는 이처럼 조종사들의 음주 적발이 잇따르자 지난주 항공 업종 종사자에 대한 혈중 알코올 농도 단속 기준치를 0.04%에서 0.03%로 강화하고, 처벌 수위를 대폭 높이는 내용을 담은 항공법 개정안을 입법예고한 바 있다.

국토부는 또 이 사건 이후 항공사 관계자들을 불러모아 간담회를 열어 조종사와 승무원, 관제사 등 항공 업종 종사자에 대한 철저한 음주 관리를 당부하기도 했다.
