SANDWICH, England (AFP) ― Choi Kyung-ju believes the demanding conditions at this week’s British Open can level the playing field to the benefit of the Asian contingent at Royal St. Georges.

The veteran Korean star, riding high after his victory at the Players Championship in May, is preparing for a searching examination of his talents on the wind-swept 7,211-yard, par-70 layout.

“The conditions here are tough and everyone will have an equal chance. But having said that, I’m feeling good about my game and hopefully I can continue my winning run this week,” said Choi.

Choi, 41, a former competitive power lifter before he took up golf, is also confident the Asian contingent can make a mark on the tournament.

“We’ve been doing well and creating headlines with our achievements. We’ll try our best to make Asia proud,” added Choi, who finished tied for 22nd on his last appearance at Royal St. George’s in 2003.

Choi is part of a sizeable Korean contingent at the Open which also includes Asia’s first major winner, Yang Yong-eun and reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Noh Seung-yul.

Choi believes that Noh, 20, who has already notched a European Tour victory during his fledgling career, has a bright future.

“Noh’s also a very good player and he can definitely go far,” Choi said.

“He’s progressing well and will be good for golf in Asia if he gets a good result this week. So do look out for him.”
