South Korean swimming star Park Tae-hwan failed to advance to the 100-meters final at the World Championships in Shanghai on Wednesday.

Park finished sixth in his heat and 14th overall with a time of 48.67 seconds, while Australia’s James Magnussen finished first in 47.90 seconds and American Nathan Adrian came second at 48.05. His time was only 0.16 seconds behind his personal record of 48.70.

At the Shanghai World Championships, the 22-year-old successfully retained the 400 m freestyle title with a stunning finish on Sunday, beating Chinese rivals Sun Yang and world record-holder Paul Biedermann of Germany.

In the 200 m, however, he failed to win a medal, finishing fourth behind American swimmer Ryan Lochte, who snatched the gold medal with a 1:44.44 record and Michael Phelps, who finished second with 1:44.79. Biedermann came third for the bronze. (596story@heraldcorp.com)
