18일 오전 5시32분쯤 일본 중북부의 이와테현 앞바다에서 규모 6.4의 지진이 발생했다.

이 지진으로 동일본대지진 피해지역인 이와테현과 미야기현의 해안 지역 일대에 규모 5 안팎의 충격이 감지됐다.

일본 기상청은 이번 지진으로 인한 쓰나미 우려는 없다고 밝혔다.

또한, 같은 날 오전 3시 5분께 중국 허베이성 탕산시에서도 규모 4.0의 지진이 발생했다. 진원은 북위 38.6도, 동경 117.6도, 지하 9km 지점이다.

아직까지 인명피해는 확인되지 않았다.

6.4 quake hits off east coast of Japan: USGS

A 6.4-magnitude undersea earthquake on Monday jolted the sea area off the east coast of Honshu, the main island of Japan, US seismologists said, but no tsunami alert was issued.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of 31 kilometers (20 miles) and hit at 5:32am (2032 GMT Sunday) some 140 kilometers east of the city of Sendai.

In March last year a 9.0-magnitude undersea earthquake off Japan’s northeast coast triggered a monster tsunami, leaving about 19,000 people dead or missing and crippling the Fukushima nuclear power plant. (AFP)
