"The Chinese government extradited Kim and his colleagues to our government as of 5:15 p.m. today," the foreign ministry official said on the condition of anonymity.

   The activists arrived at Incheon International Airport as of 7:28 p.m. and were whisked away by car after posing for photos.

 They have been widely expected to be released after Chinese Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu met South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan last week in Seoul and discussed their fate. 

   Kim, a researcher for the Seoul-based civic group Network for North Korean Democracy and Human Rights, was a key proponent of North Korea's guiding "juche" philosophy of self-reliance, but later renounced his pro-North Korean ideology and became active in projects to raise awareness of the North's dismal human rights record.

   Details of the circumstances surrounding the arrests have been unknown but South Korean officials who had met them in prison indicated that the group was apparently linked to North Koreans trying to defect to South Korea. (Yonhap News)


중국에서 국가안전위해죄 위반 혐의로 체포됐다 114일 만인 20일 귀국한 북한 인권운동가 김영환(49)씨가 21일 환하게 웃으며 가족 품에 안겼다.

김씨는 전날 오후 7시30분 인천공항에 일행 3명과 도착해 건강검진과 함께 정보 당국에서 체포 경위에 대한 조사를 받은 뒤 이날 새벽 0시50분께 경기도 용인 자택에 도착했다.

흰색 반소매 셔츠에 회색 정장바지를 입은 차림으로 검은색 여행용가방 1개를 끌고 등에 가방을 멘 채 정보당국이 제공한 차에서 내린 김씨는 다소 지치고 피곤해 보였지만 표정은 밝았다.

김씨는 체포이유와 석방조건 등을 묻자 "정보당국에서 중국 억류생활에 대해 당분간 아무 것도 말하지 말라고 했다"며 말을 아꼈다.

건강 상태에 대해서는 "몸이 좋지는 않지만 심각한 정도는 아니라 괜찮다"고 짧게 답했다.

그는 아파트 1층 현관 앞에서 기자와 5분여 간 대화를 나누던 중 "아빠다. 빨리올라와"라며 베란다 밖으로 얼굴을 내밀고 자신을 부르던 아들(대학 1년)과 부인을 보자 환하게 웃으며 "금방 올라갈께"라며 손을 흔들기도 했다.

김씨는 중국에서 체포된 후 소지하고 있던 휴대전화를 압수당하는 바람에 연락을 못해 가족들이 집에서 하루종일 기다렸을 것이라며 집으로 올라갔다.

주체사상에 회의를 느끼고 전향, 북한 인권운동가로 변신해 활동해왔다.

그는 지난 3월29일 랴오닝(遼寧)성 다롄(大連)에서 일행들과 탈북자 관련회의를 하던 중 중국 공안에 국가안전위해죄로 체포돼 단둥시 국가안전청에 구금돼 있었다.
