Israeli and Palestinian leaders are called on to "breathe new life" into the Middle East peace process, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.

A resolution to upgrade that status of Palestine passed Thursday in the U.N. General Assembly. The move gives the territories greater access to world institutions, including the International Criminal Court. The U.S. and Israeli governments were among the few that voted against the resolution.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said the "unfortunate and counterproductive resolution" was an obstacle to peace.

"That is why the United States voted against it."

The Palestinian Liberation Organization described the resolution as a way to break the political deadlock and move forward with the Middle East peace process.

Ban called on all sides to work on relaunching peace negotiations.

"I call on Israeli and Palestinian leaders to breathe new life into the peace process, which is now on life support," he said.

A Friday report in The New York Times states that Israel was working on the early stages of a settlement project that would mean Ramallah and Bethlehem would be cut off from East Jerusalem. Another 3,000 housing units were planned for East Jerusalem and the West Bank. (UPI)

반기문 유엔사무총장, 중동 지역 평화 촉구 

반기문 유엔사무총장은 이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 지도자가 중동에 ‘새로운 숨결’을 불어넣어야 한다고 언급했다.

지난 목요일 유엔 총회는 팔레스타인의 지위 승격안을 통과시켰다. 이번 움직임으로 팔레스타인은 국제형사재판소를 비롯한 여러 국제기구에 영향력을 행사할 수 있다. 미국과 이스라엘을 포함한 몇몇 국가는 이번 결의안에 대해 반대 의사를 표명했다.

수잔 라이스 유엔주재 미 대사는 “불행하며 비건설적인 이번 결의안”이 평화의 걸림돌이라고 언급했다.

한편 팔레스타인 해방기구는 이번 지위 승격으로 중동의 평화는 한걸음 더 나아갈 수 있을 것이라고 밝혔다.

반기문 유엔사무총장은 양국의 지도자에게 평화협상을 재개하고 “다 꺼져가는 중동의 평화에 새로운 숨결을 불어넣을 것”을 촉구했다.

뉴욕타임즈에 따르면 예루살렘 동쪽에 위치한 라말라와 베들레헴 지역이 정착 프로젝트의 조기 단계로 예루살렘 지역에서 제외된다. 동 예루살렘과 웨스트뱅크 지역에는 3천 가구가 들어설 예정이다. (코리아헤럴드)
