Magnitude 4.3 earthquake hits East Sea

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake was detected in the East Sea, 54 kilometers off the coast of Donghae, Gangwon Province, at 11:16 a.m. on Friday, the Korea Meteorological Administration said.

The KMA said the earthquake occurred at 37.88 degrees north latitude and 129.54 degrees east longitude.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said no damages or causalities had been reported, but local governments were working to determine whether the earthquake had caused any damage.

According to the ministry, fire departments, weather agencies and local governments nationwide had received 135 reports about the earthquake as of 11:40 a.m.

Most of the reports were from Gangwon Province, where there were 95. Another 10 were from Gyeonggi Province, nine were from North Chungcheong Province, nine were from Seoul and seven were from North Gyeongsang Province. 

Friday’s earthquake was the 26th earthquake in South Korea in 2019 and the first in Gangwon Province this year.

Friday’s was the most powerful earthquake to strike the region since January 2007, when a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred in Gangwon Province.
